Chatham Synagogue
Dimensions:102cm x 80cm
Media:Oil on Canvas
On a beautiful sunny day the holocaust memorial window glows with an intense orange and yellow light which penetrates the dark interior of Chatham Memorial Synagogue. To contain the atmosphere, in a painting, of this quaint synagogue with it Victorian charm and not lose the power of the window the two images needed to be separated. The main picture concentrates on the prayer room facing the Ark. At the side a collage combines the Holocaust window showing in clear detail the transit train trudging along in concentric circles and arriving at the named camps. A much smaller version is painted in context to the synagogue placing the window on the Western wall of the ladies gallery. The jigsaw images combine old and new windows with a marble memorial plaque, a Victorian clock, tomb stones and the synagogue exterior.
