Farewell to Blackpool Jewish Community
Dimensions:92cm x 66cm
Media:Oil on Canvas
This painting is the story of the Blackpool Jewish population, its growth, decline and its links with the entertainment industry which became the pivot of Blackpool’s prosperity. The dominant central theme is the final closing service on Sunday 13th May, 2012 of Blackpool United Hebrew Congregation. It was a very moving event, with beautiful singing from the Choir, sensitive speeches from ministers and laymen, and emotional support from the past congregants. The colourful stained glass windows reflected designs from the early years through to 1960’s, historically recording peak times within the Jewish community. The bright hues from the glass windows created an atmosphere of liveliness which seems appropriate for the location. Though many families have dispersed and expanded into new territories, those remaining were invited to join the St Anne on Sea Synagogue, which is very near and still flourishing.
