The Story of the East End, London

Dimensions:92cm x 80cm

Media:Oil on Canvas

One of Stewart’s most complex and intricate compositions delves deep into one of London’s most bustling areas, East London. The Chagall scene sets the mood of the uncertain survival of the Jews and leads the observer into the bottom extract with the Rabbi standing feeling hesitant about the destiny of his people.

The darker sad hues denote this tentative past whilst the illuminating shades represent the colours of today – synagogues, mosques, churches and the art colonies colourfully co-existing.
